11:29 pm - So I'm back...
Facebook is cool, but does NOT satisfy the urge to blog.
New book today - Local Wonders by Ted Kooser. It's (very loosly) about the state of Nebraska, a place that fascinated me for some reason.
Also Pandora.com, a fine music website that plays what you want to hear and suggests other stuff. NOW I want a Livio Radio, which wirelessly streams Pandora or one of the 10,000 other Internet radio stations available, either to it or through your stereo.

10:45 pm - Calling all LJ friends also on Facebook...
I'm not giving up LJ, but I seem to do better these days keeping up with people on Facebook.
A few of you are already FB friends. If others of you would like to be, send me a message, ok?
Thanks!

10:33 pm - Go get Eliane Elias' new CD NOW.....
Seriously.
I had HEARD of her, but nothing BY her until I was in the right place at the right time, and heard tracks from 'Bossa Nova Stories'. The CD celebrates 50 years of bossa nova music.
The woman plays a marvelous piano. Has a great singing voice. Covers one of my VERY favorite Sinatra tunes ('they Can't Take That Away From Me').
I bet I listen to this once a week...

Laid off today from the new job I started on 1/19.
Dammit.

10:44 pm - When I was growing up...
...we didn't have a TV in the house.
As a kid, I hated that we didn't have one. As an adult, there're days when I'd happily get RID of the damn thing...

1. Lost a job, gotten another.
2. Had a birthday.
3. Bought more CDs and records!
4. Discovered Brazilian pianist/singer Eliane Elias.
5. Read Quoz, the new book by one of my favorite authors, William Least Heat Moon.
How about you guys?

Then download the PDF called 'A Brief Guide to World Domination' (subtitled How To Live A Remarkable Life In A Conventional World)........
I am impressed. And once again, was led to the site by the wonderful www.lifehacker.com ..........

11:11 am - Lennon seasonal lyrics for all...
Happy Xmas Kyoko
Happy Xmas Julian)
So this is Xmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Xmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Xmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Xmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight
A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Xmas
And what have we done
Another year over
A new one just begun
And so happy Xmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
War is over, if you want it
War is over now
Happy Xmas

08:00 pm - While standing in front of shelves of travelogues at Borders...
...I realized that if I had the money, I could buy EVERY SINGLE ONE of them, read 'em, and enjoy...

10:51 pm - Anyone who's been here for awhile...
...knows I'm a huge Pat Metheny fan.
As much as I love almost everything he's done, 'Speaking Of Now' MAY be my favorite recording!

09:44 am - Did this image post?
I'm trying something new today - I've never put an image on here before!
(Edit: OK, I clicked on 'insert image' and typed in a URL. Nothing!)

02:40 pm - It's better to be busy at work...
...than to have to find things to do!

06:41 pm - Ever wanted to write about something on here...
...but can't find the words, because words aren't enough?
A good LJ friend has just gone through a horrific experience. It's one that I've had as well.
And there really isn't anything else TO say, except I'm sorry it's happened to someone else, too.

11:17 am - Steely Dan, Clarkston, MI, 8/15/08 - WOW!
So last night, I went to the above show (my first SD show EVER).
WOW! Definitely one of the best live performances I've ever attended!
This was the last night for the Joey DeFrancesco Trio opening for the band, and they were also excellent!
Here's the set list, though not necessarily in order (and I may have forgotten 1-2...)...
The Royal Scam
Bodhisattva
Don't Take Me Alive
Gaucho (sung by WALTER!!)
Peg
Josie
Black Friday
Parker's Band
Hey Nineteen
Godwhacker
Two Against Nature
New Frontier
Show Biz Kids
My Old School
Kid Charlemagne
The Fez
Aja
Highlights for ME were Walter's and Jon Herington's INCREDIBLE guitar playing, and Keith Carlock's monster drums/percussion.
Donald was in fine voice, though it struck me as a TINY bit 'thin' at first. It got better as they played!
Joey D. was invited back on stage for 'Black Friday', and the combination was just magical...I don't know how else to describe it! The band was locked into this incredible groove for the whole tune...one of those 'you had to be there' moments, I suppose!
Now if only I could get to Chicago for TONIGHT'S show.....

05:37 pm - STEELY DAN in less than 2 hours Eastern time!
Yes, my ONE summertime concert indulgence is a PAVILION seat at Pine Knob in Clarkston, MI for Walter Becker, Donald Fagen, and company.
I've been a HARD-core fan for over 30 years, and this will be my first time EVER seeing/hearing them live!

06:05 pm - More from the Church of What's Happening Now...
1. New job is going well. I'm in burn and learn mode, as I tear into hardware and create the answers, then have to look for the questions...
2. School also goes well. They tell me I'll be an MCSE when I'm done, if I pass a myriad of certification tests.
3. Children are well. Oldest daughter gets married in May '09. Son turned 26 (but is still going on 12, or 15 on a good day). Youngest daughter graduated HS and is off to Purdue in the fall, majoring in pharmacy.
4. Wife is well. She and the daughter units are off camping in the UP.
5. Cats are well. We have a new-to-us one, Scotia, a dark tortie.
All is well!

10:20 pm - I'm still alive...
Let's see...still working part time at Bed Bath Beyond. Working FULL time at Advanced Virtual Technologies. Going to school 2 nights a week for Microsoft certification, thanks to the state of Michigan.
The job at AVT is fascinating...I don't get paid very much, but it's one of the best jobs I've ever had, as far as co-workers and learning are concerned.
I've never worked for a start-up company before, either. Interesting...

02:31 pm - A quote from General Smedley Butler (USMC), written in 1935...
"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."
- from the book 'War Is A Racket'.
Gen. Butler (1881-1940) was a highly decorated USMC general. He won the Medal of Honor twice (one of a very few to do so).
